If we thought the saga of former GOP Chair/Sheriff Jamey Noel ended on October 14th at his sentencing hearing we were wrong. Jamey's betrayal of public trust and abuse of power resulted in his guilty plea to 27 felonies, an order to pay restitution for the things he stole, and a lengthy prison term. During his sentencing hearing we heard from victims who experienced tangible loss due to Jamey's actions. Money, jobs, and even lives were lost while Jamey lived lavishly at our expense. In the wake of Jamey's betrayal, I see an increase in suspicion of elected officials in social media commentary.
Healthy skepticism of our elected leaders is necessary and appropriate, but not all who serve in public office can be painted with the same brush as Jamey Noel.
The legacy Jamey leaves behind for other elected officials is one of disbelief, distrust, and doubt and the best way to restore confidence is to adopt a strategy of absolute transparency. This is why I serve the City of Charlestown with a commitment to community collaboration. Everything I do, every decision I make, every dollar I spend considers the wellbeing and needs of our community first - and I do it all in full view. Since becoming Mayor in 2020, all of our public meetings are live-streamed, all of our meeting packets including our claims docket, contracts, budget items, quotes, and bids are made public through our Agenda Center on the city's website. I host office hours in person and virtually and have made my cell phone number publicly available for texts or calls. I do this because long before Jamey Noel was convicted I noticed that people no longer trusted their elected officials. Voting became a chore, not something that excites us. I hope that we can turn that around.
In order to keep performing at my best for Charlestown, I regularly seek feedback on my job performance.
It's not enough to let an election every four years determine if I've done my job well.
For this reason I'm asking for your help. I published a short feedback form on my main webpage and I'd love for you to visit and share your thoughts with me. You can access it by clicking the button below or by using this link: https://www.mayortreva.com/ It will only take a couple of minutes. Please share with people locally as well. Our community thrives when we're all engaged. Thanks so much for your help! Together, in full transparency I believe we can restore trust again.
