On Friday I'll attend my fifth Light Up Charlestown as Mayor. It's an honor and a joy to continue this longstanding tradition in our city. I hope that all our residents and visitors know they are welcome. Light Up Charlestown means more than the official beginning of our holiday events.
It marks a season of celebration, peace, and fellowship.
Our staff members have worked hard since September decorating our beautiful city and we're eager to show it off to you. We always try to blend the most loved features with a few new additions to keep you curious about what this year will bring.
Our animated show at Jennings Plaza (the City Square) will have have you dancing to festive holiday songs featuring well-known tunes mixed with modern favorites. Be sure to visit the show for special Hanukkah music along with the Christmas tunes beginning sundown on Dec 25th. Despite the loss of trees after a summer storm, our crew has adapted the show and added a few elements to make up for the loss. The show will run nightly from 6-10pm from November 29th through New Year's Eve.
Greenway Park will also be lit through New Year's Day and is the perfect spot to enjoy a stroll with your loved ones. We'll have our concession stand open on the weekends until Christmas and we are bringing back our popular live reindeer event on December 23rd. The park will be full for Light Up this Friday and I hope you'll join us. We begin the program at 5pm with choral performances by students from Pleasant Ridge Elementary and Charlestown Middle School. We'll also have a dance performance by Drake Dance Academy. Our park will illuminate promptly at 6pm with the help of Charlestown High School media teacher, Melissa Stewart. Ms. Stewart has not stopped being a light for her students this year as she fights cancer and we could think of no better way to thank her.
The Winter Market makes a return to the Family Activities Park along with rides on the Charlestown Express train, holiday miniature golf, and character visits. Visit the park Wednesday - Saturday from 6-10pm November 29th through December 21st. The facility received a facelift this year with fresh paint and repair work throughout. We can't wait for you to see the newly painted Charlestown Express too! Our friends at Dan Cristiani Excavating gave the train a much needed update this year for us and we appreciate their donation.
We've added a few special events this year. Be sure to join us for our Jingle Bell 1K Walk/Run on December 7th and our Gingerbread and Jammies event on December 8th.
